Our Team

Our team comprises staff and research students from the University of Glasgow and partner institutions:

Dr Michael Given

Dr Michael Given is Senior lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Glasgow with interests in landscape archaeology and archaeological survey, and the archaeology of post-medieval Scotland and historic Cyprus. Michael co-directs our field school project and leads on survey and landscape archaeology.

Dr Gareth Beale

Dr Gareth Beale is a lecturer in Digital Archaelogy at the University of Glasgow with research interests in the critical and creative use of technology for the documentation and representation of archaeology. Gareth co-directs our field school project and co-leads on digital media and engagement.

Dr Nicole Smith

Dr Nicole Smith is a digital humanities expert, specialising in the connections between people and place via the process of heritage and interrogating the potential of creative practice and digital technologies to this end. Nicole has a background working in the cultural heritage sector, as a curator and as a specialist in digital technology implementation for museums, libraries, archives and art galleries. Nicole co-directs our field school project and co-leads on digital media, engagement and our collaborations with the Glencoe Folk Museum.

Prof Nicki Whitehouse

Professor of Archaeological Science Nicki Whitehouse has an interest in understanding the socio-ecological dynamics of past human populations from northern temperate environments to the Mediterranean.

Lizzie Robertson

Lizzie Robertson is a PhD Researcher at the University of Glasgow whose practice centres around creating new forms of interaction with Scottish Highland landscapes and their archaeological, historical and geographical dimensions, through innovative soundscape installations and experiences – challenging the dominance of visual technologies in the communication of landscape narratives. Lizzie co-directs our field school project and co-leads on digital media, engagement and our collaborations with the Glencoe Folk Museum and NTS.

Edward Stewart

Edward Stewart is a PhD Researcher at the University of Glasgow with an interest in the management of the post-medieval uplands in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, and the contemporary politics of landscape change in this region. Edward co-directs our field school project, leading the excavations and co-leading engagement through NTS open day events, site tours and volunteering opportunities. Edward is also involved in the redesign of the Glencoe Folk Museum ‘Land and People’ galleries.

Megan Dennis

Megan Denis is a PhD student from the University of Montana, USA. Her research interests include the wider field of archaeology, focusing on paleoethnobotany/archaeobotany, evolutionary archaeology, and First Nations pre-contact household archaeology. She focused on the palynological record of Rannoch Moor during her time as a 2023 SGSAH funded Earth scholar.
