Storm and story on Rannoch Moor: the transformation of life and land in the Little Ice Age

(Re)Creating sound and place at Glencoe

This project, run by Elizabeth Robertson as part of a SGSAH doctoral training partnership, explores the use of interactive audio experiences and immersive media installations to produce new, nuanced and challenging narratives about the landscape of Highland Scotland through the case study of Glencoe. This has involved field collecting practice, archival research and stakeholder engagement as well as the use of creative approaches to reproducing sounds lost from the landscape, to compose audio experiences for public engagement, working with the National Trust for Scotland and Glencoe Folk Museum.

Repopulating the braes

This project, run by Edward Stewart as part of a SGSAH doctoral training partnership, explores the relationship between shieling practice with other seasonal industries and practices in the uplands of Scotland in the post-medieval period. Case study landscapes included Mar Lodge, the Isles of Canna and Sanday, and Glencoe where two seasons of survey and excavations have explored the busy taskscapes of Gleann Leac-na-Muidhe. This project also explored how the local community of Glencoe interact with their upland landscapes and heritage and the values they associate with these places through workshops and walking interviews. This project has collaborated with the National Trust for Scotland and Glencoe Folk Museum.
