A digital model of the excavations at the ‘Summerhouse of MacIain’ was produced by Cole Juckette (University of Glasgow) who provided a demonstration of photogrammetric modelling as an alternative way of recording archaeological sites to the field school participants on the excavation strand.
The model, produced prior to the planning of the site with traditional drawings, provides an additional photorealistic record of the excavations as well as a useful tool for displaying the site to audiences who were unable to visit the excavations.
The model can be accessed on sketchfab here.
Students also had the opportunity to undertake photomodelling workshops during our post-excavation teaching week, led by Edward Stewart and Megan Kasten. Here students attempted to model the replica early medieval stones collection held by the department, and got hands on experience with data capture and processing.
